VARIUSTM Spectrometer
Avantes is an innovative company specialized in the development, manufacturing and global sales of miniature spectrometers and accessories. They develop customer specific spectrometer configurations targeted on a wide range of applications, from chemical analysis and quantification to color measurement and radiometry.
Avantes currently carries several different product lines and most of the current products are housed in more or less standard enclosures. The use of standard housings does not really help the recognizability of the Avantes products. The specially adapted housings are also costly, and assembly is rather time consuming. For these reasons, Avantes asked Helder to develop a new housing concept that better addresses these shortcomings and underlines the quality appearance and recognizability of the Avantes brand. First, the focus will be on one housing design for the StarLine series.

Designing a product family
The focus for this assignment was to develop a new enclosure with a unique look & feel, for the StarLine systems. However, this is only possible when there is good insight in an overall enclosure concept that fits all products from the current range and is also applicable for possible future systems. This meant that we made conceptual designs for a complete product line, which formed an overall picture of the materialization and possible manufacturing techniques, in line with the functional requirements and intended increasing production numbers. As the primary product to be launched in the StarLine series, the VARIUSTM spectrometer was the first product to be detailed for manufacturing.
Prototyping
To get a first look at the appearance and check the products’ functionality, a prototype of the VARIUSTM spectrometer was made out of metal and plastic parts. These parts were already engineered for production so the prototype could be used for some functional testing as well.
Release onto the market
With the prototype successfully validated, we guided Avantes through the final stages of preparing the VARIUS™ spectrometer for market release. Our involvement didn’t stop at just designing and prototyping the new housing concept; we also provided extensive support in navigating the production process. Helder Products played a crucial role in overseeing the manufacturing phase, ensuring that each component met the high standards we set during the design stage. We took care of the production of several key components, optimizing the process to deliver a cost-effective and high-quality solution.
